What is Proposition 65?

In 1986, California voters approved a law known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, commonly referred to as Proposition 65. This California law requires businesses to provide a warning label on products that contain any of over 1,000 listed chemicals — even when those chemicals are naturally occurring and present in amounts significantly below the limits set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Why do some of our products carry this warning?

Some of our products carry a Prop 65 warning because they may contain trace amounts of naturally occurring lead or other listed substances. We do not add lead or any listed chemicals to our products. The trace levels that may be present result from the natural occurrence of heavy metals in the soils where our ingredients are grown.

This is common across the food industry. Many everyday foods — including spinach, sweet potatoes, rice, chocolate, fruit juices, and other agricultural products grown in soil — contain naturally occurring trace amounts of lead and other heavy metals.

Are your products safe?

Yes. Our products comply with all applicable federal food safety standards. The trace levels of naturally occurring substances in our products fall well within the limits established by the FDA and WHO. We maintain rigorous quality control processes and regularly test our raw materials and finished products to ensure they meet our safety standards.

Why do some brands not have this warning?

Prop 65 is a California-specific law, and enforcement varies. Some businesses may not yet have added the warning, or their products may test below California's specific threshold levels, which are often more stringent than federal standards. The presence or absence of a Prop 65 warning does not indicate that one product is safer than another.
